Alpina introduced its D5 S, which was built on the basis of the new BMW 5-Series family. The machine received a diesel engine with 3 consecutive turbochargers and four-wheel drive system. The top-version of the Bavarian model – the M550d, in turn, relies on 4 turbines.
Alpina made the BMW 5-Series diesel engine with 3 turbines
The sedan and the D5 S are available with a 3.0-liter 6-cylinder, 6-cylinder, and 388-horsepower engine. The maximum torque of 800 Nm is available in the range 1750-2650 rpm. The gearbox is an 8-speed automatic ZF.
Engineers, especially Alpina engineers, have made new turbines as well as a new cooling and exhaust system. A different intercooler is also installed. For comparison, the BMW M550d engine with 4 turbines develops 400 hp. and 760 Nm.
The D5 S sedan accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in 4.4 seconds and the estate in 4.6 seconds. The BMW M550d may also be the same. Alpina’s 200 km / h range reaches 17 and 17.2 seconds, respectively. The maximum speed of the sedan is 286 km / h and the wagon – 283 km / h.
In addition, the Alpina D5 S has electronically controlled Bilstein shock absorbers, pneumatic rear suspension (wagon only), 20-inch wheels and twin tailbacks with active stabilizers available only with the optional Sport Plus package.
In Germany, model prices start at € 87,900, which is about € 3000 more than the M550d.
